There are some free alternatives to the Universe font that we have researched. The Univers font was designed to be very legible and straightforward and to have a character that stood out on the page due to its different weights. It seems that some fonts are more universal than others. Like the original rigid formula, the stroke width varies across the series.

This series is unlike Helvetica, where discipline was not properly maintained. The Univers font has 59 weights and was redesigned as a joint project by Linotype and Frutiger. It took inspiration from the humanist style of the Renaissance. It was initially designed as a sans-serif font and was composed of geometric shapes. Univers was commissioned by the French government in 1954 and released two years later by Deberny & Peignot. It’s used internationally in headlines, logos, and other applications for its legibility in texts of all sizes. The design is similar to Akzidenz Grotesk but with enhanced contrast and more rounded terminals. The designer maintained an excellent alignment from light to dark, from extra-condensed to extended.
The Swiss-type founding company, Haas Type Foundry, commissioned the Univers typeface to provide high-quality fonts for complex printing jobs. Univers is a font designed in 1957 in France by Adrian Frutiger.
